Celebrating Innovation: Highlights from Gravitate Health Hackathon#2

As Gravitate Health's has entered its fifth and final year, we proudly celebrated our second Hackathon, the ‘Design G-lens® Contest’, from December 9 to 11, 2025 bringing together -in Athens and online- innovators, SMEs, and experts from the digital health ecosystem across Europe and beyond.

Since our first Hackathon, the Gravitate Health project, with the aim to empower and equip Europeans with health information for active personal health management and adherence to treatment, has accomplished remarkable feats: from creating a multitude of annotating ePIs to launching the Gravitate Health Implementation Guide and expanding our lens library. This year, participants had access to Gravitate Health’s federated open-source platform (FOSP) and the opportunity to test and put it to use.

Hackathon #2 challenged teams to reimagine how medicines information can be personalized. By inviting participants to create lenses, the Hackathon aimed to contribute to the sustainability of Gravitate Health’s vision and opening opportunities for the creation of new markets.

Participants from 17 countries joined Hackathon#2 to face the exciting challenge of imagining and developing new lenses, as well as brainstorming implementation strategies. Teams were supported by expert members of the consortium in various key roles: facilitators, mentors, jury members.

The Winning Teams

The 2-day, quick-paced and intense work of the Hackathon concluded with the nomination of two winning teams, who were granted the Innovation Award and the Impact Award, each followed by a monetary prize of 2,500 €.

CodeRx Team, with two members from Greece, gained the Innovation Award for their use of Large Language Models (LLMs) and the way these were applied within the Gravitate Health framework. Technical depth and novelty in the team’s approach set their work apart.

PeerMed Team, with members from The Netherlands & Ukraine, gained the Impact Award for their strong co-creation approach, and extending the Lens library through interactive elements such as the quiz lens & gamification features. The team provided meaningful additions, introducing new types of lenses with clear user engagement and impact potential.

An Honorary Mention was offered to My Leaflet Team -a single-person team- for the achievement of a quality and relevant solution. However, the Jury concluded that the solution presented did not sufficiently expand the Lens library with new types of lenses, therefore it was deemed ineligible for a main award.

Rationale behind the decision

The Jury approached the awards process with care and integrity, embracing a multi-dimensional evaluation to ensure that every recognition truly reflected both quantitative scoring and qualitative expert judgment. While individual scores from each jury member provided a valuable quantitative foundation, the final outcomes were shaped through collective deliberation and meaningful interactions with mentors.

Three evidence-based criteria guided the Jury’s decision to grant two awards:

  • The modest number of participating and competing teams,
  • The alignment of each solution with the specific challenges set for the Hackathon,
  • The overall contribution to, expansion or application of, Gravitate Health resources and concepts.

In light of these criteria, the Design Award was not granted, as no solution fully met the Hackathon’s specific challenge or contributed to expanding Gravitate Health’s resources. This decision reflects Jury’s commitment to upholding the highest standards and celebrating achievements that truly advance Gravitate Health’s vision.

Looking ahead, the Organisers are excited to announce that a new contest for the Design Award will be launched later in 2026. This upcoming competition will feature a revised evaluation procedure and will culminate at the Gravitate Health Closing Conference in June.
We invite all innovators to join us in this journey. Stay tuned for more details soon!

Our Mentors

The Hackathon wouldn’t have been possible without the contributions of the Mentors. Mentors present on-site leaded the teams towards the desired outcome and complemented their skills. On regulatory/legal issues, Deborah Bebbington and Fakhredin Tabatabaei provided much needed guidance. On the technical side, Joao Almeida and Alejandro Medrano presented the available resources and pointed teams to the right direction.
